Lorelei Kay Wittkopp, age 81 of Spokane, WA, went to be with her lord surrounded by her family on February 4, 2024. Lorelei was born June 30, 1942, in Portland, OR, to Donald Henry Vedder and Lorna one (Millard) Vedder, but her true happiest life began while attending Marycliff High School when she met Martin (Sonny) Wittkopp, her future husband of 62 years. They married April 8, 1961, and had two
children. They built their dream home in 1966 and lived there the rest of her life. Lorelei’s home was beautifully decorated, impeccably clean, and was a safe, calm haven to all. The moment you walked in the door she was taking care of you and feeding you. For her family it was a home filled with love, music, and laughter.
Lorelei and Sonny traveled the world, taking trips to Germany, France, Italy, Spain, The Bahamas, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Holland, Morocco, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, and Vatican City. They cruised the Rhine where she got to see the Lorelei, the Caribbean Islands and Alaska.
As an adult Lorelei learned to play the piano, accordion, concertina, ukulele, and guitar. She loved to bowl, make ceramics, read, do crossword puzzles, cryptograms, and jigsaw puzzles. She loved doing crafts and was a pro at knitting and crocheting. Everyone in the family has one of Lorelei’s hand-made Afghans, including the dogs. She collected ornamental pigs, and ran a successful craft business with her sister-in-law Dorothy Hallett.
Through her life Lorelei volunteered and belonged to the Jaycee’s Women’s Auxiliary serving as secretary, the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary serving as president and secretary, the Spokane Corvette Club serving as treasurer, and was the scorekeeper for Music City Metro Softball team for many years.
Lorelei loved dogs and cats. When she graduated high school she got her first Wire Hair Fox Terrier named Angel Silver Penny. Six more Wire Hairs were loved by her through the years. Looking for a more calm breed these last few years, Lorelei adopted a rescue Shih Tzu/Terrier mix named Rascal. Rascal was the most calm and loving companion. For many years she also took care of feral cats and named them all.
After her children grew up, Lorelei took care of her granddaughters everyday while their parents worked. She loved all her grand kids and always took interest in everything they were doing. Her home was where they always wanted to be.
Lorelei was our sunshine. She was our biggest cheerleader in everything we did and she put everyone’s needs first. Her smile was beautiful and her laughter was loud and contagious. She is going to be greatly missed.
Lorelei is survived by her husband Sonny Wittkopp, daughter Marti Reinland (Jeff), grandsons Maxton Reinland, Drew Reinland, son Darrin Wittkopp (Elizabeth), granddaughters Shelby Sherman (Michael), Karly Wittkopp, great-granddaughter Luna Sherman, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and Rascal her dog. Lorelei was preceded in death by her father Donald Vedder, mother Lorna Trotta, sister Donna Gibson, and brother Barry Vedder.
A Memorial Service in her honor will be held at 11:00am on March 1, 2024, at Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, 5100 W. Wellesley Ave. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Lorelei’s life. A pastry reception will follow.
