(age 69)
Sharon was born April 9, 1946 to Verna Horning in Bismarck, North Dakota and passed away on August 27, 2015 in Spokane, Washington. Most of her childhood was spent in North Idaho, and she was a graduate of Lima High School in Lima, Montana. On July 3, 1964, Sharon married Michael Tobey, her husband of 51 years. For the last 39 years Sharon and Mike have lived together at their home in North Spokane where they raised two children. Mike and Sharon loved exploring local diners together to see if they could find the perfect breakfast. For most of her life, Sharon was an avid distance runner. She was a member of the Bloomsday Roadrunners Club and thoroughly enjoyed participating in local road races. When her body wouldn’t allow her to run any longer, she walked for exercise, frequently driving with Mike to the Columbia Plateau Trail in Cheney to take walks. Sharon’s biggest passion in life was her family. She never missed an event involving her children or grandchildren, attending anything from rock concerts to sporting events in support of those she loved. For the last several years “Grandma Moonie” delighted in being a constant presence in the lives of her grandkids as she took care of them after school, drove them to sports practices, laughed with them, confided in them, and never told them “no” about anything no matter how outrageous their requests may have been. Sharon was preceded in death by her mother Verna Horning, mother-in-law and father-in-law Hilda and Charles Tobey, sister Joan Breese, and brother Gerald Horning. She will be celebrated and missed by her husband Michael Tobey, daughter and son-in-law Carol and Chris Lewis, son and daughter-in-law Douglas and Coreena Tobey, brother-in-law Walter Tobey, and her beloved grandchildren Sheamus Mahoney, Olivia Tobey, and Quintin Tobey, as well as many step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. A celebration of Sharon’s life will be held on Saturday, September 5 at 2:00 at the West Central Community Center located at 1603 North Belt Street in Spokane. A reception will follow at the Community Center and family and friends are invited to gather in the evening at the Lewis home in Cheney.
