

Gerald grew up in Trego Township and attended Spooner High School. He worked for many local farmers as a general farm hand. On June 8, 1950, he was united in marriage to Joan Jacobs at Pine City, MN. Gerald went to work in Oregon for the logging industry until he was called into the Armed Forces, spending 10 months in Korea where he participated in the battles of Heart Break Ridge and also Hill#1024 & 728, in which he received a Bronze Star for his valiant service. After returning home, he purchased a milk route and later worked for Frank Donatell’s John Deere Dealership. He then became a semi-truck driver and did mechanic work for Link Brothers in Minong. IN 1979, he went to work for LaVern Graham as a logger, and while on the job, was stuck by lightning and as a result had to retire. During his working years, Gerald also had his own business out of his home called Trego Welding, and also drove school bus for a time. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the National Rifle Association.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 63 years- Joan, daughter Ann (Terry) and 4 grandsons: Phillip (Becky), Tony (Jessica), Jeremiah (Marissa), and Cody (Jenny), 4 great grandchildren: Lindsay, Jackson, Kyle and Gage Olson, sister Joyce (Karl) Sannwald, 4 brother in laws, 4 sister in laws, and many nephews and nieces.
Gerald is preceded in death by his parents George and Rubie Hanacek, sons: Kenneth and Kevin, sister Georgene, and brother George.
Funeral services for Gerald Hanacek will be held on Friday, July 5, 2013, at 11:30 am, at the Christ Lutheran Church in Lampson with Pastor Leonard Wildauer officiating. Music will be provided by organist Destiny Schultz and Bruce Buchman. Visitation will be held on Friday, at the Church, from 10- 11:30.
