

Melvin was born March 28, 1930 in Chicago to Harry and Mary (Anderson) Tannehill. After graduating from Harper High School, Melvin enlisted in the Marine Corps. While in the Corps, his job was in radio communications. He served from 1948 until 1952 during the Korean War. He was stationed at Cherry Point, NC, and also in Peurto Rico. His final rank was S. Sgt. After completing his service to his country, he returned to Illinois and completed one year of college. Melvin and Mary (Jonas) were united in marriage on June 12, 1954 in Chicago. The couple had 4 sons and lived most of their married life in Oak Lawn, IL. Mel was a meter reader for the Northern Illinois Gas Company for 26 years. After retiring from the gas company, they moved to Northwest Wisconsin. Mel loved the area, and had spent his honeymoon and many summer vacations here. He and the family built a beautiful log home, where he and Mary have resided since 1985. Mel loved to garden, canoe, fish, and hunt. He really enjoyed the out-of-doors and simplicity of life in “God’s Country”. He had a genuine love for his family and for his country. Mel was a member and usher at cornerstone Church for many years.
Mel is survived by: his wife, Mary, their 4 sons; Melvin (Rhonda) Tannehill of Solon Springs, Scott Tannehill of Minong, Jack (Tammy) Tannehill of Spooner, and Greg (Angela) Tannehill of Marionette Park, IL, 2 brothers, Harry “Bud” Tannehill of Minong, and Rich (Arlene) Tannehill of, FL, 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, Harry and Mary Tannehill, and his in-laws, Michael (Josephine) Jonas. His genuine love for his family and for his country set him apart. He will be dearly missed and his legacy will be passed on to those he loved most. Semper Fi, Dad!
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 30, at the Cornerstone Church in Spooner at 11:00 am. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A committal service was held Tuesday, November 26, at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner with full military honors.
