

Herbert “Red” Mattson, age 87, of Weeki Wachee, Florida, died at his home with his loving family at his bedside. Red was born in Springfield, MA, to the late Charles and Greta (Gustafson) Mattson. Red was a 26 years resident of Weeki Wachee, coming from Oxford, MA. Red left high school to join the US Navy during WWII, serving in 1944-1947, serving in the Pacific theater on board the USS Fulton and USS Sperry, as Seaman 2nd Class and Fireman 2nd Class. While in the Navy, Red was trained as an Electrician. After his naval service, Red became a Licensed Electrician, and worked for ADT (American District Telegraph) with 21 years as an Electrician, then as a Manager for 5 years in Bridgeport, CT., and 6 years in Worcester, MA. when he retired. Red was an avid NY Giants fan, but, was mostly a lifelong Golf fanatic. His love of Golf started at the age of 7 when he became a caddy, and he lived and breathed Golf ever since. Red was Christian by faith. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Joy Willoughby Mattson; second wife, Minnie Cournoyer Mattson; step daughter, Norma Jean Porter and Deborah Rose; brothers, Kenny ( Red) Mattson and Harold (Toots) Mattson. Red is survived by his loving wife, Jackie McAllister Mattson, of Weeki Wachee, FL.; daughters, Lorene Stowell of Wilkes-Barre, PA.; Heidi Sanders and her husband Tim, of Ballston Spa, NY.; step-daughters, Joyce Klar of Englewood, FL.; Barbara Sommers of Gloucester, MA.; Beverly Daigle of Charlton, MA.; Donna Charbonneau of Rutland, MA.; and Patience Hope of Utica, NY. Also survived by 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and brother, Ed Mattson and his wife Peg of South Yarmouth, MA. Red also leaves behind 10 nieces and nephews. At Red’s request he will join his comrades in arms at the Florida National Cemetery at a later date.
