Irving Stacey Hines was born on Monday, January 21, 1929, in Norfolk, Virgina. Irving was the 4th of the six children born from parents, Plymouth and Josephine Hines: Clarence, Samuel, Clara Mae, William and Christine. He was a loving brother to sisters Goldie White and Marguerita and Henrietta Hines.
At an early age, Irving’s sense of determination and control was evident. He was not to be confused with those that would “go along with the program”…. Irving made his own program. He was a multi-faceted man. His love for the community in which he grew up as a young boy, Brownsville, Brooklyn, was displayed in numerous ways. He believed in supporting his community and would contribute to numerous causes. Irving was one of the founders of Brownville’s Old Timer’s Committee and stayed a member of the committee for many decades. The Old Timer’s remains an annual event in Brownsville to this day. The dedication and loyalty to families that he grew up with extended across many generations for over 90 years. Friendships turned into “familyships” with e.g., the Adams, Murdocks, Laynes, Gilmores, Stubbs, Johnsons and Culleys, just to name a few.
Irving’s entrepreneurial spirit led him on a variety of business ventures throughout his life, which included ownership of a multitude of residential and commercial real estate properties, to small business ventures in retail and food services. He was a professional tailor (we all know how Dapper Dan LOVED to dress!!), he was a skilled trades carpenter and was able to fix just about anything in his apartment complexes and residences. He enjoyed fishing, travelling, and most importantly, being with his family and friends.
Irving was truly loved and appreciated by many. Even in his roles as honorary father, mentor, and confidant, his demeanor could change from being calm and cool to cussing you out in a heartbeat, which was understood to be given from a place of love. For all that knew him, he will be sorely missed. We all have plenty of stories to share of our personal relationships with Irving Stacey Hines.
