I fondly remember my Uncle Kenneth spending holidays with his siblings Howard, David, Dorothy, Paul & Billy, and their respective families, at the home of his parents, Worth & Elizabeth Combs, in Vilas, North Carolina, where he was born and raised. A son of these old mountains, he is missed by those who knew and loved him. 

I would like to share something Ken said to me the day of their weeding which I found kinda odd but now understand. When I went to congratulate Ken on his marriage to my sister he looked me straight in the eyes and said” I really really like Mary Ann, then smiled and turned to walk away. Later that night talking to my family I told them what he had said to me and that it was odd he didn’t say “ I love your sister. We had no explanation for it then but now I see in the short time they had together that it was a love for each other  that needed no words and he not only loved her but truly liked her... as he said.Im sorry your time together was so short, something I know too well losing my own soulmate but as I’ve learned every moment was precious and every memory is yours forever and no one can take that away. Rest In Peace Ken... 

   My first memory of Ken was watching him out work his son and my husband while they rebuilt our retaining wall at my house.  He was never in a hurry, just worked at an even pace to get the job done and barely broke a sweat.  I was amazed...
   My favorite memory of Ken was watching him climb up in an apple tree to impress my mom the first time he met her.  And apparently it worked because that's where their love story started.  
   I can't really think of a better way to show the level of respect I had for him as a person than to introduce him to my mom.  The love he showed her in the short time they had together will always be a blessing and truly treasured by our family and his.  
   He will be truly missed by everyone that knew him but will always hold a special place in our hearts for being the man he was to our entire family.
   I know you are at peace with our heavenly Father and the ones who went home before you.  

Kenneth and I had several conversations over the years that led me to think he found it hard to fit in during group encounters.  As his sister Dot said, "he was shy."  I feel that I was able to breach Kenneth's reluctance to reveal himself and have some moments of real communion.  I remember the week-end he and Mary Ann offered to house my husband David and me during David's  high school reunion.  Kenneth had spent all summer gardening, putting up all his vegetables and fruits in the freezer.  Every package was neatly labeled and perfectly stacked.  Every jar was in perfect display.  I was so impressed.

I remember the rock wall Kenneth built at one of his homes in Watauga County.  Every stone was laid as if it was selected by exact measurement.  And it was no small wall, but went the length of a long drive way.  Everything Kenneth did he wanted it to be the best he could possibly do.  I appreciate a person's dedication to excellence like Kenneth's.  

So it is with a heavy heart, I send my sympathy to Mary Ann, Ken, and Angie.  Your husband, father, and father-in-law will be missed.  Kenneth's  extended family grieve with you at this untimely loss.  Perhaps he is with mother, father, brother David and even all the saints in glory enjoying the love of our Heavenly Father.

I thought I'd be writing this many years down the road, given Ken's mom's longevity, but I guess God needed him now. I 1st heard about Ken in late 2007 when he met my sister & swept her off her feet & they had a whirlwind relationship for 6 weeks & planned a wedding for about 6 weeks later. My sister beamed during it all. She had found her soulmate & he his. He was gentle, kind, very attentive, an all around nice guy, easy to talk to, very supportive to his wife, very giving & had worked hard in his career to provide the homes they shared 1st,  in Tennessee & currently in  Florida. He was a great husband, good father, son & son in law, brother, & brother in law, uncle , great uncle, granddad & great granddad & friend. He will be fondly remembered by all & missed by all that loved him. A life well lived, Kenneth. Rest in Peace.
