Stewart was born January 24, 1929 in Scranton, Pennsylvania to the late John Clement and Bessie (Stewart) Atkinson. He grew up in Factoryville, Pennsylvania with his brothers John (Jack) and Ronald and attended both elementary and high school there. After high school, Stu spent time in the Army and then resided back to Pennsylvania. He worked as a Machine Operator at Eureka Specialty Printing and Litton Industries. He also was employed as a Shift Manager for General Electric. Later in life he pursued his love of cooking and worked as a chef at the Castle Diner in Green Ridge and then for St Pius X Seminary in Dalton. His relationship and good cooking for the Seminary got him an in and an invite to cook for the New York Giants pre-season camp for two summers during their late 80/early 90’s Super Bowl years.
Stu was many things in life but his love above and beyond anything was music. Stu played with bands all over Northeastern Pennsylvania including the Crystal Band and the Lenoxville Band. Stu started the Scranton Eagles band during their formidable years to support the fans and the team. He also started the Jolly Seniors band, a group that entertained folks at nursing homes and community centers all over the area. If you ran the Scranton Marathon at any point in the past 15 years you ran across his band in Peckville cheering on the crowd. He also put a yearly float in the Christy Mathewson Day parade in Factoryville.
Stu also had a love for trains. He would take day trips to Steamtown and Strasburg. He’d travel across PA and NY to see different tunnels and stations. He built professional level model train sets and would spend hours putting the finest details into his work on every locomotive, tree, bridge and person on the set.
Stu was preceded in death by his brothers John (Jack), Ronald, son Daryl Atkinson, companion Carol Ross and friend Nancy Gorman. He is survived by his children, Robert and his wife JoAnn Atkinson, Spring Hill, Florida; Laurie and her husband Gary Davies, Spring Hill, Florida; Brenda and her husband Louis Baker, Biloxi, Mississippi; and Sister-in-Law Adelaide (Scottie) Atkinson. Stu also has 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was always so proud of his family’s accomplishments. Even to the last days his nurses, doctors and aides knew everything about his family. He took pride in his family. He was always there before the grandkids were awake to open Christmas presents and the last one there in the afternoon putting toys together.
A memorial service will be held June 16th at Community Bible Church 1700 Heart Lake Road, Jermyn PA after normal morning services.
