Andy was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and boy did he take great pride in that. He always talked about the great times he had in the streets of Brownsville, spending many a day playing all kinds of ball with his friends. It was on the streets of Brownsville where he met and started his love affair with his beautiful wife Sylvia and wed in 1955. Andy graduated Tilden High School in 1952. Went into the Army voluntarily in January 1958; stationed in Dixon, IL. There he sang, cooked, operated the radar control tower and even made a singing appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Their son Lonny was born while still in the Army in IL in May of 1959.
When discharged from the Army 2 years later in 1960, he followed his brother and sisters to Rockland County NY where they moved into an apartment in the house on the corner of Hungry Hollow Road and Old Nyack Turnpike in South Spring Valley. Their daughter Gwen was born in December of 1962. In 1963, they moved to the other side of the Spring Valley tracks to Hillcrest, Phillips Manor/Oxford Manor on Eckerson Road where they met the most incredible group of life-long friends – the Berliners, the Odzes, the Fishkins, the Friedmans, and countless others too many to name.
In 1975, Andy/Sylvia purchased their first home and moved back to South Spring Valley and in 1999, they downsized, moved West but not that far west, and purchased a co-op in Bon Aire/Suffern, NY.
Andy learned the carpet trade from his older brothers Jerry and Donny, and went on to doing carpet measures and installations. He also worked at various jobs – Accounting / Office Manager for Korvettes in NYC, Portchester and Nanuet, and when the installations got too much, he became a carpet salesman for Ekezian Carpet, Carpet One and Tri-State Carpet Connections.
He and his wife, Sylvia were devoted partners for nearly 68 years. They shared a great passion for their family and friends and loved to laugh. Boy did they love to laugh. Andy was also an avid NY Yankee and NY Knicks fan and watched every single game – and boy was he super upset when it was streaming on Peacock and Prime Time – he really meant Amazon Prime!
Some of the things that brought Andy joy was, making people laugh without telling one joke, watercolor painting, reading in the park, soaking in the sun from his deck, lunch with his buddies. He was loved by all, a father-figure to many. He was oh so witty, had a kind-spirited heart, and a laid-back go with the flow personality. The memories we all have are countless and will be cherished forever, he left footprints on many hearts, and will be sorely missed by all. He was a straight-up, honestly, what you see is what you get, one of a kind guy man - loved by all who knew him.
Andy is survived by his wife, Sylvia, son Lonny, daughter Gwen, and “like-a-son” Mike. Also survived by Carmen and his three grandchildren, Adam, Rebecca and Hannah and countless nieces, nephews and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, his siblings, and many life-long friends.
