Arthur Bookman, 91, passed away Saturday evening January 12th surrounded by family, at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City. He was born, raised and lived all of his life in his beloved Brooklyn (until moving to Valley Cottage 13 years ago to be closer to family here). And, yes, he never had the same rooting interest for baseball after the Dodgers left.
Arthur was married to his high school sweetheart Lillian until she passed away last April, a few months shy of their 70th wedding anniversary. He was a Jewish community leader in Brooklyn, President of Temple Beth Am, and later President of the borough wide B'Nai B'Brith Council. A wonderful orator, he was a popular speech maker at events to support Israel, free the Soviet Jews and fight anti-Semitism. Arthur had many different jobs as a young man, but settled on estate and financial planning for most of his career. He is survived by his children Frada Bookman of North Bellmore, NY; Rabbi Terry Bookman of Miami, Fl; and Robert Bookman of New City; his daughters-in-law Kathy and Karen: nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He will be remembered.
Funeral services will be held at Hellman's Memorial Chapels,Spring Valley, Wednesday January 16th, 11am.
The family will sit shiva locally and receive friends at the home of Rob and Kathy Bookman, 7 Plains Drive, New City on Wednesday and Thursday, minyan's both nights at 7pm.
