Gary Sam Hochman, beloved social studies teacher, Camp Starlight Head Counselor, husband, business owner, father, son, & friend - passed away on Oct. 11 in his home in New City. He was 75 & is survived by his wife Ann, daughter Halee, & son Spencer.
Gary grew up in Brooklyn, which imbued him with an enduring love of stick ball, the Yankees, Nathan’s hot dogs, deli, dim sum, & cheesecake. Brooklyn is where his love of food began, and Gary’s appetite for food & life could never be satiated. When he was around, nobody was going home with leftovers (unless of course, it was covered in cheese).
In his 30+ years at Camp Starlight, Gary was often described as a superhero by countless campers & counselors whose lives he touched through his mentorship, zest for life, compassion, & general silliness. As a public school educator in the S. Bronx, he gained student trust & formed relationships that have lasted decades.
Gary remained active in his retirement, even being known to hand out a business card informing friends “I’m retired - please call: afternoon baseball games, movie matinees, afternoon pool, 1-2 hour lunches.” Gary was a one of a kind friend. He was loyal, selfless, & would always show up when you needed him. He will be missed by many, but forever in our hearts.
