

Harriet Blecher of Rockland County passed away On Saturday January 28th,2017. She was born in Brooklyn, and after living in Yonkers, moved to Spring Valley in 1959. As a youngster, she attended Tilden High School. After completing her family, Harriet went back to school to achieve her Bachelors, and then Masters of Social Work. Harriet was just one credit short of receiving her doctorate. Harriet Blecher was the Director of Social Work for The Rockland County Department of Health from 1978 until her retirement in 2007. Harriet implemented the first Early Intervention program in Rockland County, which to this day has the 2nd largest budget. She created MS support groups and bereavement groups as well as helping uninsured women obtain health insurance at the pre-natal clinic at Nyack Hospital. Harriet and her late husband Jack M. Blecher were founding families of Monsey Jewish Center where she was Sisterhood President, and Harriet was a Life Member of Hadassah. Harriet was pre-deceased by husbands Donald Rosenthal, Jack M. Blecher and Norman Bernstein. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Dr. Mark Blecher and Lary Aasheim of Philadelphia, Stacie & Ken Podos of Suffern, Doug & Jill Blecher of Belle Mead and Craig Blecher of Los Angeles. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandsons and her sister Susan Leitner.
