Just heard of Herb's passing. Echoing so many of my fellow PS 95  students I remember Herb as a kind and inspiring teacher. My only drawing skill remains Snoopy on his dog house. May his memory be for a blessing.

Herb Bernstein was our favorite teacher at PS 95. In 5th and 6th grade I was one of his top gym students in 1970-71. He never forgot my sister and myself. I stayed friends with him through these years. He donated his wonderful art to the NY Coalition for Healthy School Food. He was a mensch. We all loved him. Thank you for creating the best most loved teacher I ever had.

Thinking fondly of you and Herb.  This must have been such a challenging year, in so many ways.  My heart hurts for you.
I remember Herb, Marc, Joel, and Etta with great love as Passover approaches.  The Bernstein seders were chaotic, instructive, fun, absurd, and a generous helping of the best of Jewish family interactions.
I pray for your family's well-being, for your healing and restored joy.

A great man who made a scary PS 95 into a fun, educational positive growth experience. RIP my friend 

I had Herb as my gym teacher in 1968 and he helped mold me into the man I am today. I wasn’t the most talented athlete but he treated me like I was with encouragement and reassurance. One time he told me, “Michael, you may not play for the Knicks, but keep up the great grades you have and you might OWN the team!”

Every time I draw a Snoopy on his dog house I think of his smile. Gone but never forgotten…

I was a student in the 4th grade when Herb first arrived at PS 95.  He immediately enchanted us with his kindness and fun demeanor.  He made Gym class the place to be.  He taught us how to draw Peanuts characters and he introduced us to “ Say no to tobacco and drugs..” He choreographed a gymnastics show to the song Aquarius.

Fast forward to 2002 when I came back to visit the school and he was now Principal!  We toured together and reminisced.  We stayed FB friends and I’ve followed him since.  He touched so many lives in a profoundly positive way.  I’m blessed to have had him touch mine at such a young age.

Herb was “one of those guys”. Funny, caring, creative, supportive, good at almost anything he tried. As a new teacher at P.S. 95, he was awe inspiring to watch in the classroom.  He managed it all with such enthusiasm, love, and  talent. He infused his photography, love of baseball,  art, and everything else in his arsenal of talents into the curriculum and his delivery of the information. Very few educators can weave it all together like that along with being an advocate and strong, supportive adult for every kid he encountered. 
He was just as grand as a colleague and friend. Always willing to help and teach .  I learned a lot from Herb over the years and cherish all my memories. So lucky to have crossed paths with him. May his memory always be a blessing. 

Mr. Bernstein was my teacher at PS 95 in 1977.  He threw chalkboard erasers at me from across the room because he constantly caught me reading a book under my desk lol! He even gave me  permission to read my book during class because he knew how much I loved reading. He was everyone’s favorite teacher. May he rest in eternal peace.

I will remember Herb for his big smile, his killer curveball, his impressive speed and  jump shot, his artistic prowess, and his kindness to me as his younger cousin (especially at Seders with Uncle Joel and Aunt Etta and at the Pythian summer camp I attended with him when I was little and in need of reassurance).  I know you all loved him very hard, in the ways that were most meaningful to him; and I know you'll have no trouble remembering him well.  Blessings of peace and healing from me to you. My family is sending love and hugs to you at this time. As your former student, I fondly remember spending time in Mr. Bernstein's classroom at PS 261.  We all thought it was so cute that the 4th and 6th grade teachers were married. I wish I would have saved some of his Snoopy drawings. As an adult, I was always excited to visit Mr. B at his school when I was working on any kind of technology for Bronx kids. I'm so grateful that we all had the opportunity to say "hey" during our FaceTime call. Please take good care of yourself and know that our love for you is forever.

My condolences to the Bernstein family. Mr. Bernstein was a great teacher at P.S. 261 in the Bronx with his wife Mrs. Bernstein. He was very very nice person and he will always be remembered.

Mr. Bernstein was such a talented and passionate teacher who taught us not just the 6th grade curriculum but filled our school year with creative skills that have made an impact even into our adult lives.  In our 6th grade play, he taught me how to paint the stage set, mixing primary colors to make new colors.  He was such a fun teacher showing us magic tricks and teaching us to draw Snoopy and Garfield.  I cannot imagine the time he spent on organizing the end of year auction.  

Even after we graduated, he kept in touch and became friends with many of us and continued to watch us grow.  Mr. B was responsible for many of us to be reacquainted.  At one of the reunions at Michael’s bar, Mr. B continues to caption memories by taking pictures and sharing them with us.  
This past January, he joined us for a virtual reunion.  He amazed all of us that he has such great memories and details of the time we were in his class and with our current life. 

I’m truly blessed to have been in Mr. B’s gym classes for 3 years and in his 6th grade class.  He will always have a special place in my heart.

For 6th grade in PS 95, I had the blessing of being in Mr. Bernstein’s class. I remember thinking, “He’s the gym teacher! What’s that going to be like??” It was awesome! Some of my best memories are of him letting us pursue ideas that we thought up ourselves (ex. building mealworms condominiums, writing comics, etc) and using what we enjoyed to help us learn.  I never doubted that he cared about each of us students, even when our supposedly “gifted” class did things that weren’t too bright. For example, around graduation time, Mr. Bernstein invited our whole class with our families out to his home near Bear Mountain for a BBQ. As a bunch of city kids, we weren’t used to streams with real fish swimming in them.  I remember a bunch of us were able to catch a fish, with bare hands, which we carried all the way back to the house to show everybody. It seemed like it took at least 5 minutes to get to the house. Mr. Bernstein and all the adults were delightfully intrigued.  But then a rumor spread quick that it was illegal to take the fish. So feeling sorry for the fish, and afraid of breaking the law, we all decided to run back (at least 15 minutes had already passed) to put the fish back in the stream to save it.  I can only imagine the looks on Mr. Bernstein’s and our parents’ faces as they watched their “gifted” children run off with this fish which no one had thought to put in some water.

Mr. Bernstein was a kind and encouraging educator and person who let me be myself during a time I really needed it. I continue to be grateful that he chose to share his gifts with us.

My deepest and dearest condolences to the Bernstein family.  Mr. Bernstein was and always will be a true class act. His actions and kindness moved and touched so many of us  students in such profound ways. One of the best educational years of my life was being in his class at PS 95 in 1989. He was a most magical man teaching us all that no star 💫 was beyond reach that there was no limit to what or who we could be. As an adult I had the opportunity to speak with him and tell him how many ways he impacted my life. Coincidentally we lived in the same building in Bayside, NY at different times and it was so nice to be able to laugh about the chances of that happening and remembering so many details  of all the amazing students in my 6th grade class.  That  moment of reconnection was just priceless. It's a pleasure to read and hear all of our thoughts as I know he did so much good for all of us. He will be forever the greatest of all time. Mr. Bernstein thank you,🙏 you helped me beyond words to see life differently. You made such a deep impression on all our hearts and I am forever grateful. Sleep in peace and know how very much you were loved by so many. 🙏Your legacy of  excellence and enrichment will continue to live on in all of us. Thank you for being a bright light, your actions  spoke louder than words. Always in my heart and never forgotten. 

Mr Bernstein was my gym teacher and gymnastics coach. He was funny and talented. I still have  my autograph book with his signature snoopy drawing.  Although He wasn’t my general Ed teacher he made his presence throughout our whole 6 grade class. I will remember him fondly. My deepest condolences to his family but have comfort that he was a beloved member of the education system and part of an elite group.

Herb was a kind and gentle soul.  He was my teacher at PS 95, and made learning so much fun.  He taught us how to draw and held an auction at the end of the year for us.  He also opened up his home to us by hosting a BBQ for us.  Every year a student falls in the lake and that year it was me.  My heart aches to learn of his passing but my soul is richer for having him in my life.  My love and prayers are with you at this time.  Thank you for everything Mr. B.
