My condolences to Karyn and her family for the loss of her husband Joel.

Karyn may have introduced me to Joel once in the late 1980s. She was a beloved colleague at Suffern High School.



I am not exact sure when I met Joel. It was on the LIMARC repeater. Joel would be heading to a gun club meeting in Queens and I on my way home from work. What made the friendship work was radio. He became one of my Elmers (mentor) with all things radio but most of all DX (long distance communications). He lead the way  to contacts to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Joel also introduce me to  two nets. First to the 240 group where I made many friends in the US and else where. And second to the WB2REM  gathering. I am glad I finally went to see him at the new house in Pomona.  That was our last time together.  

Hello my old friend,sorry to hear you have gone from us,i enjoyed the many qso's we had on 20m,it's shame we didn't get to see each other a few years ago when you came to the UK.Thank you for your frienship over the years.

I am utterly shocked and saddened to have learned the news yesterday , of course, directly or indirectly  via ham radio. (Ian in Australia to Ira in Liberty to me). I’m a bit out of touch and am recuperating myself from open heart surgery on December 3rd. So, my apologies to Karen and the boys and Jamie for not expressing my heartfelt condolences sooner. 

Without doubt, Joel had a tremendous following as he is  known worldwide having lit up the airways for many years just as he lit up a room with his irrepressible personality. He was unique- one of a kind . We had brief encounters as Novices in Queens circa 1958-1960, but then became hard and fast ham radio buddies and did everything together, both involving ham radio, a thousand hamfests, Dayton numerous times , chasing DX and always ascertaining who was a DB stronger , and also adventures as his lawyer for many of his business enterprises. We also started a tower company, First Call Communications ( FCC), together ( name was my idea!).

OMG, so many stories and so many adventures now bubble to the surface. Joel, don’t worry, we’ll reminisce when next together , and also attorney-client privilege shall prevail. Karen and the kids, if you need anything please let me know , weakened state or not.

I’ve known Joel for perhaps 50 years, both on and off Ham Radio. We used to meet at Hamfests and on the 2 meter repeater during work commute. Always interesting conversations often about our travels or families or ham radio. I remember him visiting me at my workplace which was his high school alma mater ( Forest Hills HS.) He wanted to see the Physics Lab room.  When I took him there he told me that room was secretly used for impromptu serenades by Simon and Garfunkel during class when he was there, after the teacher closed the door and pulled down the shades.

Although we never met in person, Joel and I spent many hours chewing the rag and putting the world to right. He was a real gentleman, a true amateur radio enthusiast and will be sorely missed by all.

I've known Joel for about 40 years, having met him as a fellow radio amateur in Rockland.  We shared stories during his stints of selling medical equipment, providing parts for early gaming computers and selling U.S. Towers - I bought one from him.  Joel was very generous and helped out our local radio club with donations while I was president.  Although I moved away from Rockland almost 16 years ago, I made sure to visit with Joel and his wife when I was traveling, and sometimes talked with him via Ham Radio.  I will miss him.

Very glad to have met Joel on one of his trips to Australia (Photo on QRZ). Always loved our chats on the radio and found him to be a true gentleman. Joel will be missed by many, myself included.

     Joel was a longtime member of the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club, and it was always a pleasure top have a conversation with him. He was knowledgeable  and always willing to share that knowledge as well as so many  stories about his worldwide contacts and travels. He was a gentleman and a great spokesman for ham radio. Joel was a "Ham's Ham" not unlike Hiram Percy Maxim. He was a stellar  ham and a kind and sensitive person that illuminated a room instantly. He could convince a frog to get a ham license and then work him on 20 meters.

Joel was a wonderful friend to me for more than 40 years.  While we both grew up in neighboring communities in the New York City area, we did not meet until later in our adult life. Whether it was gathering  together with our families in  South Florida , later on in St. Louis, MO, at the Dayton Hamvention or just chatting on the air or via the "twisted pair",  Joel was always a pleasure to spend time with. His loss will be deeply felt by all that knew him, but our memories of good times together can not be taken from us and will last throughout our lives. I am so glad to have been able to know Joel for these many years !

Ulla and I are very sad. I have known Joel over 50 years. We'll certainly miss his phone calls arranging socializing for enjoyable dinners and lunch meetups in the area.

He has 1,000s of friends around the world in every continent because he knew how to speak to people and always took a sincere interest in them. We will all miss his wonderful ability to have friendly conversations with anyone, any time and any place. Unlike many today, Joel certainly understood the art of voice communications and practiced E.D.H.I. daily.

A great loss to you, relatives, his friends and radio amateurs globally.

I first met Joel in the 1970's through ham radio.  However, most of my extensive contact with him was in the 90's  through hunting.  One gets to know -- really know -- a person  during those long  trips together in New York State and Colorado.  

He was proud of his son's success as a lawyer, and his daughter's success in the investment field.  He was also very supportive of them in any manner, when and if called for.  And the welfare of his other son was never far from his mind.  Karen's success was also truly a source of great pride.

In his earlier life, Joel had been a competitive pistol shot.  When in his 60's I saw him take a buck mule dear with one pistol shot ... testimony to his prowess in something other than amateur radio.
And he was a very knowledgeable ham -- some one who was always willing to share that knowledge with other hams.

We all know people in terms of  our interactions with them.  Mine may have opened a window for you on a different part of the life of a very interesting and worthwhile person.

He deserved a better end.

I just heard of Joel's passing this afternoon. I would like to pass on my condolences to Karen and the family.  I have loved talking with Joel over the years. He had a quick wit that he coupled with a slower deliberate response at times. During our EDHI sessions he passed along a lot of wisdom about life and the hobby of ham radio. He will be missed very much !

On Christmas eve 24th December 2020 whilst working 20m , it sounded like Joel calling me through the pileup.. I almost said hello Joel, whilst waiting for his "Queen Bravo Victoria" that never followed.  Bless his soul.

Thank you very much for all of the kind words from the Ham radio community.  They're very comforting to hear at this difficult time.  Most of you don't know me, but I'm Joel's son.  I'm not a Ham, but I can tell you that my dad - Kilowatt Two Queens Bloodiest Vampire - cared very deeply for his friends in the Ham community all around the world.  Ham radio was the second love of his life.  We all will miss him very much.

My condolences to Joel's family.  I can only imagine what they are going through at this time.  The Amateur Radio community will also miss Joel.  He was a true HAM and had friends all around the world.  I very much enjoyed meeting up with Joel on the bands since we were in proximity of each other and recently working him on his new 6-m beam. I met Joel years ago when I was operating as DL4BM out of Bremerhaven, Germany.  I still have his QSL card for one of our contacts around 1967, 1968.  I wanted to express my condolences.  I know he was very active, and I heard him from time to time on 40 meters in the early morning hours.  My sincere condolences to his wife and family.   May he rest in peace, and work lots of DX from up above.

I met Joel and Karen last year in Orlando.  

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the both of them.
