
JOSEPH S. KATZ of Pearl River passed away on Sunday, September 4th at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City, NY. Born on April 21, 1934, in St. Albans, Queens, he practiced orthodontics in Spring Valley and Suffern for 40 years before retiring in 2012.
After moving to Rockland County in 1964, he raised his family in Spring Valley and then New City where all four of his surviving children, Bruce, Mark, Robert, and Ruth, graduated from Clarkstown High School North. He is also survived by his brother Stanley and five grandchildren. He leaves behind his beloved Sheila Bunin.
The oldest child of Max and Ida Katz, he grew up in the back room of his family’s dry cleaning store on Farmers Boulevard. He graduated from Andrew Jackson High School and served as the president of the honor society, also known as Boy Leader of Arista. He went on to Queens College and New York University School of Dentistry, where he was awarded the Sarah Miller prize for excellence in periodontics and continued his dental lifelong learning as a member of the prestigious New-Conn Orthodontic Study Club, He served proudly as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, Strategic Air Command, at McCoy Air Force Base in Florida. He was also president of the Rockland County Dental Society, spearheading its efforts to fluoridate Rockland County’s water supply. He also served as President of the Rockland County chapter of Israel Bonds.
He and his family were active members of Temple Beth El in Spring Valley, New York, where they were nurtured by Rabbi Louis Frishman, z”l, Cantor George Weinflash, z”l, and Rabbi Ronald Mass. He later joined Orangetown Jewish Center and was a devoted congregant of Rabbi Craig Scheff. Although a diehard Yankees fan, his ultimate fandom was for his grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 1:15 pm at Hellman Memorial Chapel, 15 State Street, Spring Valley, NY, followed by a burial at New Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ.
