Marion Weisberg died peacefully on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 after a short illness. She was 93 years old. Known as Mitzi, she was born on February 7, 1928 in Fall River, Massachusetts to Philip and Minnie Garrick and was the youngest of seven children.
She married her husband Meyer Weisberg in 1951 and they settled in Spring Valley, N.Y. where Mitzi lived for the past 60 years. It was only recently that she moved to Manhattan to be closer to her son, Philip, and his family. Meyer pre-deceased Mitzi 36 years ago.
At a time when many women were homemakers, Mitzi worked outside the home, helping to support her family. She had a long career as Senior Case Manager for Rockland County’s Department of Social Services
Mitzi loved a good game of Mah Jong and played the game well into her 80’s. She enjoyed following professional sports with her brother Irvy and grandson Mike, celebrating Thanksgiving and Passover with her sister Ruthie’s family, and celebrating The Jewish New Year, Sukkot, Hanukkah and Purim with her sister Irene’s family, and the rest of her large extended family who live all over the United States and Israel. She also enjoyed meeting friends for dinner and a movie.
Fiercely independent, she was out and about on her own last week on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for her daily coveted cup of coffee and a muffin while offering advice to Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees on ways to improve the team’s performance. She was very proud of the fact that earlier this year, she drove herself on icy roads to receive her two Covid vaccinations.
Mitzi is survived by her two daughters, Marjorie Cohen (Bruce), and Carol Madwatkins (Al), her son Philip (Alla),. Grandchildren Melissa Molina, Samantha King, Marlo Primmer, Allison MadWalker (Madwatkins), Meredith Madwatkins and Pamela Madwatkins, Michael Weisberg and Hannah Weisberg; plus seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
