Born in 1949 in Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York, he was the son of the late Robert I. Fromson and Charlotte Steinberg of Delray Beach, Florida.
Steve graduated from Spring Valley High School, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University and his Juris Doctor from New York Law School cum laude.
While a college freshman, Steve became a licensed real estate salesperson and while maintaining a full academic schedule through college, graduate school and law school, had a successful career in residential and commercial real estate.
After graduating law school, Steve joined the law firm of Greenberg and Wanderman in Spring Valley in 1976, later renamed Greenberg, Wanderman and Fromson when he became a partner, where he practiced law for his entire career. Throughout that time, he was General Counsel to the East Ramapo Central School District for 32 years, the Suffern Central SchoolDistrict for 30 years and Rockland BOCES for 26 years. He is remembered by countless Board of Education members, central and building administrators and other school staff as being highly accessible and always available no matter how complex the issue might be. He particularly enjoyed mentoring young administrators and was very proud that several went on to be superintendents of schools.
He is survived by his long time and loving partner, Ronna Zoberman, his mother, his siblings, Gerald Fromson (Jean) of Winston-Salem, NC; Paul Fromson (Ann) of Greensboro, NC; and Sharon Birnbaum (Henry) of Myrtle Beach, SC; as well as many nephews, nieces, grand nephews and a grand niece.
Although very serious about the practice of law, Steve had an excellent sense of humor which he used to put those around him at ease no matter the difficulty of the situation.
He loved travel, Broadway, annual trips to Tanglewood and Aruba, socializing, reading, a wide array of music, particularly Motown, and good restaurants. He was a "news junkie" and was a consummate student of American history and American politics.
Steve was a very active member of the Rockland community throughout his life. He was a member of the Rockland County Bar Association having served as its President; the American Heart Association, Rockland-Orange-Sullivan Chapter, where he served as President; the New York State Affiliate of the American Heart Association where he served as Chairman of the Board; Cornell Cooperative Extension upon whose Board he served for 18 years including as an officer; and the Board of Child Care Resources of Rockland County including as President of the Board. In addition, as a young attorney he helped the Volunteer Counseling Service create its Mediation Program, was a member of Leadership Rockland's Class of 1995, and volunteered for the Rockland County American Cancer Society.
Over the years, he helped create the Senator Eugene Levy Scholarship Fund, the Dr. Jack R. Anderson Scholarship Fund and the Hal Block Soccer League. For many years he volunteered his time to the Career Apprenticeship Program at Ramapo High School and felt fortunate that several of the high school students he mentored went on to successful careers as attorneys.
