Born on April 14, 1933, in Lafollette, Tennessee, to the late Hueston and Edith (Boshears) Carroll, J.R. was part of a generation built on grit, loyalty, and hard work. Those qualities shaped his life and defined the man so many loved.
J.R. was a proud ironworker and longtime member of Iron Workers Local 290. He helped build the world around him — quite literally — and carried himself with the quiet confidence of someone who knew the value of honest labor. He was strong in both hand and heart, dependable as the steel he worked with.
Though he worked hard, he knew how to enjoy life just as fully. Norris Lake held a special place in his heart. He loved telling folks he didn’t need a map to find his way around — after all, he had watched it being built. The lake wasn’t just water and shoreline to him; it was memory, history, and pride.
When he wasn’t at the lake, you could often find him on the greens at Weatherwax Golf Course or Jamaica Run Golf Course, enjoying the game, the company, and the simple rhythm of a good round of golf. And come Monday night, there was no question where he’d be — holding court at Fricker's, enjoying a meal and the comfort of routine. It was more than dinner; it was tradition.
J.R. was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deborah Maines-Carroll in 2008; his parents; and his siblings, Robert, Clyde, Omalee, and Georgia.
He leaves behind a loving family who will carry his stories and spirit forward: his daughter, Jeanette (Steve) McIntosh; son, Mike Carroll; grandchildren, Tara Carroll, Brandy (Matthew) Coates, and Gabe (Ben) McIntosh; and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Nathan, and Makayla Coates. His legacy lives on in each of them — in their strength, their laughter, and the steady example he set.
J.R. will be remembered as a man who built things that lasted — bridges, memories, traditions, and a family grounded in love. Ninety-two years is a long chapter, and he filled every page with purpose.
A visitation for J.R. will take place on Monday, February 16, 2026, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at Anderson Funeral Home, 40 North Main Street, Springboro, Ohio 45066. A funeral service will immediately follow at 6:00 PM.
