William “Bill” Lee Akers, 94, of Springboro, Ohio, died peacefully on February 21, 2022, with his children at his side. A life-long resident of Springboro, Bill was born on October 28, 1927 to Wiley Franklin Akers and Clara Belle Zinck Akers. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 73 years, Ruth Dean Wilson Akers, and his only sister, Martha Jane Akers Kendrick.
Bill is survived by his children: son Jeemes (Imogene) Akers, and daughters Vicki (Edward) Kuhn, Tricia (Norman) Lathrop, Debbie Barton, Katy (Dennis) Skaggs, and his grandchildren: Kimberly Payne, Jennifer Lathrop, Aimee Woodin, Brett Skaggs, Robert Lathrop, Amanda Sjodin, Bethany Curtis and Jed Barton. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Bill graduated in 1945 from Clearcreek Rural School and later joined the Marine Corps during WWII. After serving in the Marines he worked at Frigidaire, Apex, and attended Miami Jacobs to learn punch cards near the beginning of computer technology.
As an avid gardener, Bill spent many hours working in his yard. Many people drove by the house to enjoy his beautiful and colorful flowers. For decades he coached many young men and women in various sports. He continued to participate in senior sports leagues into his eighties. He also enjoyed traveling and playing cards.
His deep devotion to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior influenced all his words and actions. He graduated from Dayton Bible College in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical Studies, and became an ordained minister in the Church of the Open Bible.
During his later years, he enjoyed sitting outside on the porch, waving at friends as they drove by, and offering a genuine big smile.
His family would like to recognize close friends Linda Butcher, Howard (HoJo) and Marlene Johnson, and the staff at Hillspring Care Center. A special thank you to Dr. Joe Garland for his loving care of William and Ruth for so many years.
We will miss this gentle, loving soul.
In lieu of flowers, to honor dad, please donate to a charity/church of your choice.
