

A. “Larry” Jazo, 67, of Pawnee passed away at 11:10 a.m. Monday, September 02, 2002, at St. John’s Hospice. He was born January 20, 1935 in Chicago, the son of Refugio and Magdalena Carillo Jazo. He married Lois Kenyon February 23, 1962 in Champaign, IL. Mr. Jazo graduated from Harrison Technical School in 1953 and enrolled in the United States Navy, where he reached the rank of Electronic Technician P.O. 2nd Class. During that tenure, he was a member of the Great Lakes Blue Jacket Choir and played football for the San Francisco Reserve Pacific Fleet team and was selected All-Navy in 1956. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1962. From 1962-71, he taught and coached at Brimfield High School. He continued his education during that time and received a Master of Arts degree from Bradley University in 1969. In 1966 he began his affiliation with migrant education, becoming the director of the migrant education program in Princeville, Illinois, which received state and national recognition for program excellence. In 1971, Mr. Jazo was hired as an assistant manager, Compensatory Education Section at the Illinois State Board of Education to coordinate programs for children of migratory farm workers. Later in his career he also administered education programs for neglected/delinquent and chronic truant alternative state funded programs. As a member of the National Association of State Directors of Migrant Education, he served as secretary/treasurer and as president in 1979. He was chairman of the National Migrant Student Record Transfer System Committee for six years. He served as an advisory member of the task force for the formation of the U.S. Department of Education and was invited to the White House for its inauguration. He also served as a consultant for a series on migrant education for the Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood television productions. He served as an advisory member of the task force for the formation of the U.S. Department of Education and served as a national spokesman at federal funding hearings for state and national educational programs. After his retirement from the ISBE in 1991, he served as a private consultant for various state and national education organizations. He was also a member of the Illinois Education Association, National Association of Migrant Education, Phi Delta Kappa, St. Mary’s Church and charter member of the Pawnee Knights of Columbus Council # 6379. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Rueben Jazo. He is survived by his wife, Lois; a daughter, Mia Jazo Harris (husband Dave) of Chatham; and two sons Mike (wife Sylvia) Jazo of Aurora, and Dan (wife Lisa) Jazo of Lindenhurst; grandchildren MaClayn, Jaquelin, Micaela, Cooper and Javier; mother, Magdalena Jazo of Crete; three brothers Refugio Jazo Jr. of Orland Park, Jim Jazo of Oak Forest and Dan Jazo of Tinley Park; and a sister Anita Lewis of Crete; and many nieces and nephews. Remains have been cremated. Friends may call at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home from 4-8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 5, 2002. Visitation will begin with a wake service at 4:00 p.m. Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2002 at St. Mary’s Church in Pawnee with Reverend Charles Dahlby. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
