Adele P. Sluzalis

Adele P. Sluzalis, 93, of Springfield died at 8:50 a.m. on Monday, November 12, 2007 at St. John’s Hospital. Adele was born March 12, 1914 in Springfield, the daughter of William and Petronella Pestinkas Augustitis. She married John A. Sluzalis on January 5, 1946. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many, Adele retired in 1983 after 15 years of service with the State of Illinois. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, the Lithuanian Club of Springfield, and the Springfield Ostomy Club. She was known to many friends as “Momma Slu”, who was famous for her Lithuanian “peasant foods”, especially her “Secret Slaw”, and her “Kugelis”. She provided many area newborns with beautiful hand-knitted and crocheted blankets and booties. She was an amazing survivor. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Patricia M. Havenar; and a brother, William Augustitis, Jr. In addition to her husband, John A. Sluzalis of Springfield, she is survived by a son: John G. Sluzalis of Springfield; two grandaughters, Michelle M., and Rebecca L. Havenar, of Springfield; one special cousin, Violet Oaks of Eugene OR; two nephews; several grand-nieces and nephews; and one great-grand niece. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all, for prayers and support, especially to the doctors, nurses and staff members at St. John’s Hospital and Lewis Memorial Christian Village, and to her friends at Alterna/Care. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4 p.m. and continue until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2125 N. 21st St., Springfield, with Rev. Donald Meehling celebrant.
