Albert J. Holmes

Albert J. Holmes, 87, of Springfield, died at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2008 at the Regency Nursing Care Residence. Albert was born May 13, 1920 in Springfield, the son of Albert K. and Catherine Casey Holmes. They preceded him in death. He married Mary J. (Kraus) Gillespie in 1960 in Petersburg. She preceded him in death in 2005. Albert was a 1940 graduate of Cathedral Boys High School and served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was employed as an Operating Engineer for the City of Springfield. He was a Democratic Precinct Committeeman, and a member of Knights of Columbus #364 and St. Aloysius Catholic Church. He is survived by four sons, Rick Gillespie of Springfield, Gary (wife, Jane) Gillespie of Quincy, Tom Gillespie of Boynton Beach, FL, and Michael (wife, Ann) Holmes of Springfield; two daughters, Janette (husband, Gene) Drendel and Lynn (husband, David) Chapman of Springfield; and eleven grandchildren. Family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be at held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2119 N. 20th St., Springfield with Rev. Donald J. Meehling celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
