

Tony was born September 29, 1937 in Belleville, the son of Anthony C. Sr. and Edvina Treager Mathews. He married Patricia "Pat" Urbanckas on April 15, 1972 at St. Aloysius Church in Springfield by Rev. Robert Franzen.
Tony graduated from Cathedral High School in Belleville and earned his Bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He retired from Tri-Pro Graphics and Packaging and was employed previously with Uarco, Inc. for over 25 years. He was also employed with Swift Meat Company in East St Louis. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 364, TRN Club, the Lithuanian American Club, the YMCA, and YMCA Indian Guides. Tony was also a soccer coach for his children's teams. He enjoyed the outdoors, taking care of his Yorkie, Bear, and listening to jazz, folk and Cajun music. He was a very kind and generous person.
He was preceded in death by his parents and parents in law, Pete and Mary Urbanckas; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Schwaegel and Bob Frost; aunt, Virginia Treager, among other aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Mathews of Springfield; two sons, Scott Mathews of St. Louis, MO and Troy Mathews of Springfield; sister, Connie Schwaegel of Belleville; sister-in-law, Donna Frost of Springfield; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved Yorkie, Bear.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 524 E. Lawrence, Springfield with Rev. Zachary Edgar, celebrant.
Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
