

Arthur was born May 9, 1916, in Paducah, KY. , the son of Arthur O.Sr. and Martha Jane Shepard Jacob. He married A. Jeanette Carter on Dec. 19, 1938 and she preceded him in death on Mar. 18, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Eugene; and three sisters, Jennie Brewton, Edna Logan and Rubie Pokora Springfloat.
Arthur's family moved to Springfield when he was two years old. He attended Springfield Public Schools. He was employed by Knox Cleaners before becoming a partner in Lloyd's Cleaners and Furriers with Lloyd Inslee. They enjoyed a successful partnership for more than 35 years, expanding their business to include Lloyd's Laundry and a principal intrest in Scotchwash, a chain of coin operated laundries in Central and Southern Illinois and Missouri. He later owned Dee-Jay Amusements with Dorothy Leezy. After retirement, he volunteered his services to the American Cancer Society among other charitable organizations.
He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, and a former long time member of Elk's Lodge 158 and the Sangamo Club, as well as the National Institute of Dry Cleaners and related professional organizations.
He was an avid sports fan of Baseball, in particular. He was a devoted student of Baseball all his life, and participated in the game in his earlier years. He later coached Little League Baseball for several years, which was a source of great enjoyment. He also enjoyed boxing, bowling, boating and water-skiing, and displayed perseverance and talent as a thre-cushion billiard player, winning the Illinois State Elks Championship in 1965, and placing second , third or fourth several other years. Among his other interests were, gardening( he loved to share his tomatoes and apples with, family, friends and non-profit organizations) and love of dogs, especially his German Shepherds, Duke and Heidi. Art was devoted to his family. His peronality, outgoing nature and quick wit endeared him to all he met. He was genuine, honest, loyal and above all a gentleman.
He is survived by two daughters, Netsi Herrman of Springfield and Pat(husband, Fred) Long of Kensington, MD.; two granddaughters, Kathryn Long of Brooklyn,NY. and Karen Long of Bethesda, MD.; one sister, Christine Rhodes of Fort Bragg, CA. and several nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel Friday Mar. 13, 2009 from 5:00 until the time of services there at 7:00pm with Rev. Dr. Thomas Radtke officiating. Private burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
