

August "Augie" E. Butcher, Jr., 83, of Springfield, died at 9:33 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at his home. Augie was born April 24, 1935, in Springfield, the son of August E. and Irene Walsh Butcher, Sr. He married Josie Barlow on September 8, 1962, at Sacred Heart Church. Augie attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Feitshans High School in 1953 where he played for the 1952 Feitshans Flyers undefeated football team and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He also held the city shotput record for several years. He attended Illinois State Normal University, now known as ISU. Augie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and worked for his family owned Butchers Tavern. He owned and operated Augie Butcher Construction. He was a member of Church of the Little Flower, Little Flower Mens Club, Carpenters Local Union 16/270 and Friend in-Deed for 46 years. He managed and coached Khoury League and Little Flower Schools baseball. Augie was an AVID St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Rams fan. He enjoyed supporting and attending his childrens and grandchildrens numerous sporting events and activities. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Angeline Irene Butcher; two infant children; brother, William E. Butcher; and sisters, Rosemary Butcher and Irene Brahler. He is survived by his wife, Josie of Springfield; his children, Brad (wife, Andrea) Butcher and Brock (wife, Rebekah) Butcher, both of Springfield and Jolyn (Butcher) Martin of Chatham; seven grandchildren, MaKenna, Addyson, Brooklyn, Blair, and Jackson Butcher, and Reid and Paige Martin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Graveside Ceremony: 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Rev. Jon Bormann officiating and military honors to be provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
