

Calvin August Engel, 83, of Springfield, passed away at 9:10 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at St. John's Hospice surrounded by his loving family. Cal was born March 9, 1932 in Kinmundy, the son of August and Lydia Bergmann Engel. He married Zetta Rose Stewardson on June 7, 1959 in Shelbyville. Cal graduated in 1950 from LaGrove High School in Farina, IL; was a U.S. Army Military Policeman from 1952-1954; and attended the U of I. He worked for the Illinois Secretary of State for 16 years. He had his own painting and property management business, for over 50 years. Cal was an honorary member of the Springfield Ceramics and Crafts Club. Because he always wanted to know how to dance, he took lessons at the U of I and at Arthur Murray's Studio, performing on several local TV programs. His favorite hobby of 30 years was as an antique dealer. His most important role was as a son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Norma Young and Minerva Engel; brothers Melvin and Charles Engel; In-laws, Ralph and Willie Mae Stewardson; sisters-in-law, Joyce Rogowski and Loreine Engel; and brother-in-law, Fred Young. He is survived by his wife; children, Jeff Engel (Chuck Martin), Sabrena (Robert) Campbell, Todd (Annette) Engel, all of Springfield; grandchildren, Colin, Alexandra and Noah Campbell, Dathan and Madison Engel, and Kyle and Stephanie Wise; siblings, LuVerne Engel and Donald (Theresa) Engel of Kinmundy, Louis (Laura) Engel and Wendell (Kathy) Engel of Farina, Larry (Alecia) Engel and Duane (Donna) Engel of Salem, Carol "Bud" (Marie) Engel of Doswell, VA, Dolores Dorr of New Castle, IN, Mary (James) Palmer of Charleston, Jean (Gilbert) Kroening of Carbondale, and Ilene (Donald) Post of Springfield; in-laws, Sue Engel of Kinmundy and Chet Rogowski of Hilton Head, SC; over 250 nieces and nephews and many cousins; each one special in his heart. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October, 1, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield. There will be an additional visitation from 10:30 until 11:15 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home. Funeral Ceremony: 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October, 2, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Homes, with Rev. Vaughn Beeman officiating. A private family burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors by the Department of Defense. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
