

Charles Nelson Hammond, 81, of Springfield, died on Monday, September 3, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center. Charles was born September 17, 1930 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Maybelle Hammond. He married Susan Uebele Hammond on September 11, 1966 in Western Springs, IL. He graduated from Yale University in 1952, served as an officer in the United States Navy during the Korean War, and in 1957 graduated from the University of Illinois Law School. After graduation he worked for Brown, Hay and Stephens, but spent the majority of his career at the First National Bank (now U.S. Bank) as head of the Trust Department. He was a lifetime resident of Springfield and served on many civic and charitable organizations in order to better the community. Charlie enjoyed golf, bridge, and travel, but the most important were his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Amy (Jeffrey) Brower, Nancy (Dave DuRoss) Hammond, and Sarah (Ron) Michaelson; son, Peter (Julia) Hammond; eleven grandchildren, Katie, Maddie, Anna, and Olivia Brower, Brady, Colin, and Bennett DuRoss, Abbey, Zibby, and Jack Michaelson, and Charles Wilcox Hammond. Memorial Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 14, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, 321 S. 7th St., Springfield with Rev. Dr. Clifford Hayes officiating.
