

Charles F. “Charlie” Smith, 78, a lifelong resident of Springfield, passed away at St. John’s Hospice on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.
He was born in Springfield, October 5, 1933 the son of Lee and Dorothy (Ewing) Smith. He married Myrtle Cornish in Springfield, October 20, 1951 and she preceded him in death August 13, 1998. His parents also preceded him in death.
Charlie was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. He earned a Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars and a United Nations Service Medal.
After returning from the service, he owned and operated Charlie’s Barber Shop for over 28 years, retiring in 1997. He also owned and operated Charlie’s Fireworks in Grandview for over 40 years. He attended the Christian Church.
Surviving are his 3 daughters; Donna (husband Bobby) Oller of Auburn, IL, Debra (husband Rusty) Monroe of Rochester, IL., and Denise (husband Curt) Walls of Dawson, IL, 2 sons; David (companion Cindy Ushman) Smith of Sherman, IL, and Derald Smith of Florida. There are 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Larry (wife Marge) Smith of Springfield, several nieces, nephews, and cousins and his dear friend, Mary Perganson of Florida.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home 505 E. Allen where a visitation will be on Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 1-4 pm and where funeral services will be held at 10 am Monday October 24, 2011 with Rev. David Upchurch officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Springfield with military honors provided by the Department of Defense.
In lieu of flowers, those that wish may direct memorial contributions in his memory to Lewis Memorial Christian Village.
