

Clarie M. Steffan, 90, passed away Sunday July 29, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center. Claire was born in Springfield on October 5, 1921. Her parents were Elsie Z. and Curtis Houston. She married Melvin G. Steffan on April 26, 1947. He preceded her in death on January 12, 2012.
Claire attended Butler School and graduated from Springfield High School. She attended Brown's Business College and upon completion became a secretary for the Illinois State Bar Association. After raising her family she worked as a secretary at R.B. Evans Construction Company and the Illinois State Fire Marshall's Office. She also was employed at Nancy's Closet and The Dormouse.
Claire was a marvelous seamstress and also enjoyed many varieties of needlework. She was an avid reader, a talented gardener and an excellent cook. She took great pride in her home and her family.
Claire and Mel were long time members of Westminster Presbyterian Church and she was a volunteer in the church library for many years. They later joined Chatham Presbyterian church. Claire enjoyed accompanying Mel to annual reunions of his World War II 57th Bomb Wing Group. They formed many warm and long-lasting friendships on those trips. She also was fortunate to find many new friends at The Seasons and at Oak Terrace Healthcare.
Claire is survived by two daughters, Susan, (Al) Manson of Springfield, Marilyn (John) Tebrugge of Sandwich, IL; five grandchildren, Jason Manson, Alicia Manson, Adam (Monica) Tebrugge, Joe (Katie) Tebrugge and Dan Tebrugge; 6 great grandchildren; and 4 cousins.
A private family service will be held with burial at Camp Butler National Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The American Heart Association.
