

Dorothy Virginia Carter passed away on March 23, 2011 at University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics in Columbia, MO. Dorothy was born on April 6, 1917, the daughter of John Allen and Donna Vaughn Simms. She married Charles John Carter in 1938; he preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Allen Carter; a daughter, Susan Carter; and an infant son and grandson. She leaves behind a daughter, Donna Carter Hartzell Johnson and husband, Neal, of Fulton, MO, and sons, Ronald Allen Carter and wife Carol of Hayden, CO, and Michael Aloysius Carter and wife Jacque of New Castle, CO; and a number of grand and great-grand children. Dorothy lived in Springfield most of her life. She worked at Sangamo Electric during WWII, was a school crossing guard for St. Joseph Schools for 15 years, delivered flowers for Hennesy's Florist and cared for 21 foster children through Catholic Charities, including Anne Louise Davidson of Springfield. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 28, 2011 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Mass: 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 28, 2011 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Rev. Msgr. Thomas P. Holinga, V.F. celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
