She was married at Union Baptist Church to Inman Foster (deceased). Dorothy was an accomplished pianist and organist at the church for over 30 years, and played for the children’s choir called The Shining Star, which sang at various churches and organizations. She was also a teacher at Union Baptist Day Care until it closed. Dorothy is the younger sister of Charlotte Berry, who was also a member of Union Baptist Church.

Her family describes her as determined, feisty, intelligent, and sweet. Dorothy was like a second mom to anybody who came in contact with her.
Dorothy enjoyed reading, gameshows, sports (especially the Chicago Bulls), traveling (going to Europe, Asia, Jerusalem, and all 50 states), and attended the opening of Disney World.
She said her greatest accomplishments were: along with Charlotte, she began the tradition of honoring the mother with the most children present and the child who traveled the greatest distance to visit their mother on Mother’s Day (a tradition which Union Baptist Church still observes); her Piano Performance Scholarship from Springfield Junior College; her 1983 Springfield Urban League Community Service Award; volunteer work with the AARP local chapter in Springfield; and her favorite scripture being Genesis 1:3.
When asked if she had any words of wisdom for the younger generation, Dorothy said, “it is important to have a work ethic”.
