

Dorys Weisbaum Berg, 95, of Springfield passed away on December 30, 2010 in St. Paul, MN. She was born on April 29, 1915 in Los Angeles, California, daughter of David and Hattye Barker Weisbaum. Dorys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Albert A Berg, and her brother Dr M. Byron Weisbaum as well as brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and special friends.
As a child Dorys lived in Chicago and Minneapolis, moving to Springfield, IL in 1926 after the death of her father. She was a graduate of Springfield High School and Springfield Junior College. Dorys was a lifelong and active member of Temple B’rith Sholom. She sustained and was in turn sustained by the community that she and her husband Al worked to build there. She served the temple as a board member and was active in the sisterhood, including having been president and treasurer of that board. In addition, Dorys was a board member of the Illinois Symphony and the Springfield Jewish Federation. As a young adult, Dorys worked for the State of Illinois. After the death of her husband in 1977, Dorys succeeded Al in managing their nursing home business until she sold it in 1983.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Judy and Michael Kadens of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Susan and David Cobin of St Paul, Minnesota, grandchildren Ber (Bradley) Kadens and wife, Wendy, Gregory Kadens and wife Marcia, Emily Kadens, Peter Kadens and wife Amy, Seth Cobin and wife Mary, Liora Cobin and husband Adam Barbanel-Fried, and great-grandchildren Jonah Kadens, Miriam Kadens, Madeleine Kadens, Jillian Kadens, Noa Kadens, Gabriel Cobin, Rosemary Cobin, Meital Fried and Meital's baby brother, Dorys' newest great grandchild, born Sunday afternoon, December 30, just hours before his great grandmother died. Dorys is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews, their spouses, children and grandchildren: David Weisbaum, Lindy Weisbaum Seltzer and husband Bill, Marty Weisbaum Brunner and husband and Tom, and Dr Jon Weisbaum and wife Dr Kathryn. She is also survived by Al's neices and nephews, their children and grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Freada Millman of Buffalo Grove, Illinois.
Several companions made Dorys’s last years safe and filled with their friendship. In Springfield Susan Schroeder, Susie Bonansinga and Linda Harmon were with her over several years and gave much of themselves to make her life richer. In St Paul Jenneh Matthews and the staff at Sholom East brought joy and comfort as well as skill in care taking to her final year.
Boardman Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. A funeral service will held at Temple B’rith Sholom at noon on Sunday, January 2. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
