

Dr. Frank Coble, DVM, 80, of Loami, Illinois, entered heaven on Monday, September 8, 2025. He was born on January 5, 1945, in Springfield, Illinois, the second oldest of four boys of Dr. J. Porter Coble, DVM and Mrs. Alyce V. Coble.
He graduated from Springfield High School in 1963 and with honors from Western Illinois University in 1966. He completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Illinois in 1970 and returned to Springfield to work alongside his father at Coble Animal Hospital. He founded Sangamon Avenue Veterinary Clinic in 1985 and co-founded Animal Emergency Clinic also in Springfield. He mentored several local veterinarians throughout his career and served on the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association board of directors. Dedicated to his profession, he practiced veterinary medicine for over 50 years, following in his father’s footsteps, before retiring in 2023.
Frank grew up in Springfield, spending summers with his brothers at Lake Springfield. In adulthood, he found joy in traveling, hunting and shooting sports, skiing, boating, tree planting, wildlife conservation, and tending to his farms. He was an avid Illini football and basketball fan, a devoted St. Louis Cardinals supporter, and a lifelong dog lover. Frank also served on the national board of directors for the National Wild Turkey Federation for many years.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, a life member of the National Rifle Association and Illinois State Rifle Association, Patron Life Sponsor of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, Springfield Motor Boat Club, and American Business Club, among others. Frank will be remembered for his tireless love of animals large and small, his gift for conversation, and his kindness and generosity to everyone he knew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. J. Porter and Alyce Coble; his brothers, James Coble, J. Porter Coble II, and Rex Coble; and a past fiancée, MaryLou Seiz. He is survived by his nephews, Jayson Coble of Lincoln, Illinois, and Jeff Coble of Palm Coast, Florida; his sister-in-law, Linda Coble of Palm Coast, Florida; four great-nieces and a great-nephew; several cousins; and many close friends.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut St., Springfield, with Rev. Ryan Kehoe, celebrant. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Blessed Sacrament Parish, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
