

He was born on February 14, 1950, in Springfield, the son of William and Marie (Exum) Abner. Gary married Janice Knoche on May 13, 1994, in Riverton.
Gary proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam Era. He retired from working at Viper Coal Mine in Williamsville. He built his own home and was a member of the Riverton Harley Riders. Gary enjoyed hunting, catfishing, riding his motorcycle, darts, bowling, going to gun shows, and spending time with friends and family. He was known to always be there for people—no matter what.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Terri Ostermeier.
Gary is survived by his wife, Janice Abner of Riverton; sons, Matthew Abner of Warrenburg and Aaron (Kendra) Abner of Mt. Zion; step-daughter, Lacie Zick of Bethalto; grandchild, Jackson Abner; brother, Earl (Connie) Abner of Glenarm; and sisters, Billie (Ron) Robinson of Waverly and Julie (Joe) Kelley of Buffalo; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
