
George Johnson, 95, of Springfield, passed away at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, IL. He was born to the late George and Mildred Johnson on December 26, 1917 in Chicago, IL. George graduated from Tilden Technical High School and attended college classes at Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, before entering the U.S. Army in 1941. He was involved in combat operations in both North Africa and Europe, where he received several medals and ribbons. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Upon returning from the war, he met and married Ella Mae Myers. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service from where he retired in 1982. In 1986, after residing in Sauk Village, IL for almost 30 years, he and Mae moved to Bella Vista, AR to enjoy their retirement. In 2007, they moved to Springfield to be closer to their daughter Cindy. George was active in the Bethel Covenant Church in Flossmoor, IL, the Bella Vista Community Church, Bella Vista, AR, and the Parkway Church of Christ in Springfield. He enjoyed golf and bowling into his mid-90's and was healthy and active almost his entire lift. He loved to travel and he and Mae visited Europe, Hawaii, Canada, and many states during their retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marion O'Hara. He is survived by his wife, Mae of Springfield; his daughter, Cindy of Springfield; his son, Craig (wife, Cynthia) of Vancouver, WA; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkway Christian Church, 2700 Lindbergh Blvd., Springfield, IL 62704. A memorial ceremony will be announced at a later date.
