

She was born on June 19, 1926, in Decatur, IL, the daughter of the late Walter Frederick and Grace (Hulcher) Allen. She grew up in Denver, CO, where her family moved when she was young. Helen married Edward F. Hellner on May 14, 1949, in Springfield and he preceded her in death on Dec. 30, 1981.
Helen worked for the IL Dept. of Agriculture for 22 years, retiring in 1991. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Springfield and had been a member of its Builder’s Class since 1948. She also was a member of the Springfield Noon Lions Club, an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and very much enjoyed listening to Mark Gifford play the organ.
She is survived by her 2 sons, Mark (Tracy) Hellner of Arlington Heights, IL, and Jack (Mary Pat) Hellner of Springfield; 4 grandchildren, Neal (Kelly) Hellner, Patrick (Beverly) Hellner, Kara Hellner, and David Hellner; 2 great-grandchildren, Abigail and Elizabeth Hellner, and her beloved niece Marilyn and nephews Ned and Don.
Besides her parents and her husband Edward, she was preceded in death by her companion Bob Glatz, her brother Fred Allen, and her sister Dorothy Allen Stewart and Dorothy’s son, Scott.
Visitation will begin at 10 am on Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 am, both at Central Baptist Church, 504 S. 4th St., Springfield, with Reverend Mary Ellen Sharp officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield. Services are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, Springfield.
