
Mr. Garvey was born July 3, 1917 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, the son of Hugh J. and Patience O’Neil Garvey. He married Jane Driscoll at St. Patrick’s Church in Decatur in 1943; she preceded him death on August 22, 2000.
Mr. Garvey graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1939 and did graduate work there. He was a reporter for the Cleveland Press and a member of the American Newspaper Guild Local #1. He served in the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant from 1940 until 1945. Mr. Garvey was an editor at Henry Holt & Co. in New York City editing, among other works, the Pulitzer Prize winning, Up Front by Bill Mauldin. In 1947 he founded Templegate Publishers & Booksellers. In 1960 he established the nationally recognized Abraham Lincoln Museum.
Mr. Garvey was a member of the Friends of Lincoln Library and a moderator of the Great Books Course. He was a member of the Audobon Society and the Sangamon Club. In 1963 he established an interdenominational fellowship group and was a member of the Board of Springfield College in Illinois. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish and was an instructor of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (now known as PSR).
He was also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter: Grace Garvey.
He is survived by five sons: John (wife, Regina) Garvey of Astoria, NY, Hugh (wife, Leslie) Garvey of Elkhart, IL, Michael (wife, Margaret) Garvey of South Bend, IN, Thomas (wife, Elaine) Garvey of Springfield, Peter (wife, Eleanor) Garvey of Springfield; three daughters: Joan (husband, Stephen) Hermes of Bourbonnais, IL, Ann (husband, Martin) Klest of Oak Park, IL, Patience (husband, Jeffrey) Lapp of Warrenville, IL; twenty-four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Friends may call at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home from 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2003. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. Concelebrated Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2003 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Reverend Richard Chiola principal celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
