Jay Schukai

Jay Schukai, 78 of Springfield, passed away on November 4, 2024 at his residence. He was born on February 7, 1946 in St. Louis to Glennon Schukai and Virginia Schmidt Schukai. Jay married Bonnie Funderburk and she survives.

Mr. Schukai is also survived by his children: Jeffrey (Melissa) Schukai of Springfield and Emilie Schukai of Chicago and two grandchildren: Hunter and Molly Schukai.

Jay was a US Navy Veteran who served as a Radioman in Iceland from 1970-1974. He graduated from the University of Missouri and retired from the State of Illinois where he worked as a Veteran's Representative for the Department of Employment Security.

Jay loved being a father and a grandfather... but didn't allow anyone else to touch the thermostat. Spending time with his family and grandchildren was important to him. In his younger years he was a soccer coach for his children when they were growing up and Scout Leader for Pack 32 in Springfield, IL.

Jay spent his days smoking cigars with his friends and son, working in his yard, talking about plants and the weather, and watching sports - especially soccer. His favorite team is Manchester United. Not a Thanksgiving went by without listening at Alice's Restaurant, at least once. Jay is greatly loved and missed.

Cremation rites were accorded and a graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on December 6, 2024 at Camp Butler National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make donations to AmVets Illinois via the following link: ilamvets.org and condolences may be left at www.bischfuneralhomewest.com.
