

Wayne was born on April 1, 1920 in Auburn, the son of Elmer and Ethel G. Miller Mayes. He married Velma Viele on September 2, 1946; she preceded him in death on April 21, 2014.
As a member of the “Greatest Generation,” Wayne served in the 88th Signal Battalion with the United States Army. He and Velma owned La Cantina Food Mart. Wayne was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the VFW. He enjoyed Ballroom dancing and in later years, he loved bowling. After his own Honor Flight in 2012, he became a volunteer for the organization.
He is survived by two sons, Carl (Linda) Mayes of Springfield and James (Karen) Mayes of Glendora, CA; one daughter, Carlene (Jack) Hippen of Alton, IL; four grandchildren, Angela (Andy) Mayes Murphy, Lisa Mayes, Gina (Takuya) Miyazaki, and Buddy Hippen; two great-grandchildren, Liam and Layla; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
