

He was born on May 8, 1943, in Charlotte, MI, the son of William and Gertrude Hutchens Powers. John married his wife, Peggie S. Underwood on January 12, 1980.
John grew up in Michigan, spending summers swimming and sailing on the nearby Duck Lake. He was a graduate of Michigan State University and was employed as a field representative in the insurance industry. John was a member of the Professional Insurance Agents Association, the Springfield Ski and Travel Club, and the unofficial Friday night golf gathering. John had great natural charm, and was known as funny, kind, and an all-around "good guy". John was interested in other cultures, world traveling and, at one time, lived abroad. His world view led to ongoing support of many charitable causes. As an avid reader, John maintained a substantial library of signed books.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Powers; and sister, Linda Smith.
John is survived by his wife, Peggie; their children, Emily, Joseph, Brendan, and Michael; wonderful grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as his loving cat, Daisy.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Private family ceremonies will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Forever Home Feline Ranch, Green Peace, or the World Wildlife Fund.
