

He was born on July 13, 1952 in Springfield, the son of the late Joseph L. Young, Sr. and Ruth A. )VanAusdall) Young.
Joe graduated from Northwestern High School in Palmyra,IL in 1971. He served in the United States Air Force from November 1971 through September 1984. He served in the Southeast Asia theater to include Vietnam and Thailand from 1974 to 1975 and in Okanawa from 1978 to 1981. He retired from Horace Mann Insurance Company in Springfield in 2007 after 23 years. He also presently was working for JCPenney beginning in 2006. He was a former member of Palmyra United Methodist church and most recently attended Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church in Springfield.
Joe is survived by his partner, Jon R. Lyerla of Springfield; his daughter Dana M. Young of Lawton, OK; sisters, Debbie R. (husband Andy) Gripp, Janet S. (husband Bill) McCready, and Shelia A. (husband Randy) Karrick, all of Virden, IL; brothers Mike L. (wife Jennifer) Young, of Shelbyville, KY, Jeff L. Young of Alton, IL,a special cousin Brian N. Young, his aunt Sidna D. Young of Springfield, his uncles, Charles A. (wife Linda) VanAusdall of Virden, IL, and Allen Wayne Young of Sacramento, CA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by special family- son Scott R. (wife Colleen) Lyerla of Glen Carbon, IL; father-in-law James R. Lyerla, Sr. of Highland, IL; brothers-in-law, James R. (wife Deborah) Lyerla, Jr. of San Jose, CA, T. Wood (wife Shari) Lyerla of Bradenton, FL, and Thomas F. (wife Cheri) Lyerla of Marine, IL. His granddaughters, Mairead Eliazbeth and Aoife Ann Lyerla of Glen Carbon, IL; and very special friends, Kathy A. Burnett of Lawton, OK, Mary L. Brancato, and Mike Accettura of Cave Creek, AZ.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, James L. and Ada S. Young, and Charles A. and Maxine VanAusdall, and a brother Donald A. Young.
Services are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield, where visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 4 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at 10:00 am at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 S. Douglas Ave, Springfield, IL, with Rev. Julia Melgreen officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force and the Interveterans’ Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Research or Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church.
