Kimberly was born March 10, 1962, in Springfield, the daughter of Norman and Constance (Kesegi) Van Houten.
She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1980 and was employed with the State of Illinois for many years. Kim then went to work as a laborer for the Laborers Union Local #477. She was a life-long resident of Springfield and a member of Christ the King Parish. Kim loved Harley-Davidsons and was a Raiders fan. She liked spending time with her neighbors, family and friends and was an animal lover whose dogs were the light of her life. Kim lived life by her own rules. Her tough exterior hid a tender heart, and she was likely to tell you she loved you in one sentence and to F off in the next. She was 100 percent genuine, and you could take her or leave her, but you couldn’t change her.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Connie, and former husbands, Kevin “Whitey” Melton and John Rudin.
Kim is survived by her son, Joseph Norman Melton; father, Norm Van Houten; siblings, Leigh Anne Van Houten, Kandice Luce (Brian), Kevin Van Houten (Wendy), Lyndee Fein, Kammy Ferrigno (Lennie), Laurie Clayton (Skip), and Kacy Van Houten; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield, with The Very Rev. Christopher House officiating.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Central Illinois, 3309 Robbins Rd., Suite 206, Springfield, IL 62704.
