

Leo V. Ashenfelter, 83, of Springfield, died at 8:14 p.m. on Sunday, September 3, 2006 at his home. Leo was born on May 14, 1923 in LaPlace, IL; the son of Henry L. and Chloe Moore Ashenfelter. He married Eunice Gibboney on August 31, 1946 at the Church of the Brethren in LaPlace. Leo was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran and was awarded three Bronze Stars for the Southern Philippines and Luzon; New Guinea Campaigns. He was a graduate of Brown’s Business College. He retired from the State of Illinois Department of Transportation where he had been employed as the Chief Accountant for thirty-seven years. He was a member of Riverton – Lavely Masonic Lodge #786, Elks Lodge #158, Ansar Shriner’s in Springfield and Disabled American Veterans Hall Hagler Chapter 15. He enjoyed bowling and was a big fan of the University of Illinois sports and an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan. Leo loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Jenkins; one brother, Merrit Crouch, one sister, Garnet Harold, parents and one son –in-law, Rick Kuder. Leo is survived by his wife, Eunice Ashenfelter of Springfield; three sons: Michael (wife, Kathy) Ashenfelter and Mark (wife, Tina) Ashenfelter both of Springfield and John (wife, Liane) Ashenfelter of Bloomington; two daughters: Karon (husband, John) Kane of Springfield and Jody Kuder of Odin; ten grandchildren; four step grandchildren; three great grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren and one niece. The family welcomes friends to visit from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2006 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Additional visitation will be held from 10:45 am – 11:45 am on Friday, September 8, 2006 at First Church of God, 2800 Stevenson Dr. Springfield. Funeral Ceremony will be held at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, September 8, 2006 at First Church of God with Pastor Jonathan Grubbs and Pastor Shaughneysy Small officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Military Honors will be conducted. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 2001 S.
