

Leroy E. (Roy) Tungett, 82, of Springfield, passed away at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, October 9, 2015 at Vibra Hospital in Springfield. Roy was born August 31, 1933 in Alton, the son of Earl E. Tungett and Alfaretta L. (Camp) Tungett. He married Marilyn J. Hutchison of Alton, September 5, 1953; she preceded him in death on August 18, 1993. Roy married Carol Yeaman Poock of Springfield on June 3, 1995. Roy had four children and four step children; Captain David Tungett (USN retired), who passed away December 29, 2012, Linda Hoadley (Gary) of Cumming GA, Eleanor VanDeventer (Lyle) of Chatham, and Michael Tungett (USMC Veteran) (Michele) of Rochester, Richard (Becky) Poock of Chatham, David (Pam) Poock of Athens, Mark (Carol) Poock of Springfield, and James Poock of Springfield. There were twenty grandchildren; David Tungett Jr. (Karen), Deborah Bailey (Peter) both of Rl, Laura Ogg (Jason) of WY, Daniel Hoadley (USN) of FL, Heather Huitt who passed away February 23, 2011, Kayla Medina (Jonathan) of CA, Kyle Huitt (USMC) (Danielle) of TX, Matthew Tungett, and Amelia Tungett both of Rochester, Paul VanDeventer (USAF) of AZ and Laura VanDeventer of Springfield, Robyn (Kent) Vandeventer, Eric Poock, Christina (Daniel) Eardley, Kayla (Steve) Klasinz, Sarah Poock, Adam Poock, Brandon, Stephen (Autumn), and Alyssa Marques. They also had twelve great-grandchildren; Chace and Olivia Tungett, Holden Ogg, Noah Huitt, Penelope and Alexander Vandeventer, Spencer Eardley, Zoey and Peyton Klasinz, Aribella Marques, and Ramarius and Travarius Marques. Roy had one sister, Eleanor Well (deceased) of Medora and two brothers, Jim Tungett of Alton and Jack Tungett (deceased) of Sweet Home, OR. Roy also had three nephews; Elmer Well Jr. (deceased), Edward Well, and Tim Tungett, and three nieces; Dawn Selvog, Sherry Kudna, and Jennifer Hendricks, several great nieces and nephews, and many cousins. He graduated from Alton Senior High School, June, 1952. He then attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and was a proud member of the University of Illinois Marching lllini and Symphonic Bands. He graduated with honors in 1956. He also completed some post graduate studies at Harvard Business College. On June 18, 1956 Roy began a 34 year career with Illinois Bell Telephone Company and the Bell System. During those years his family followed him through eight household moves beginning in Alton and including three moves to the Chicago area, one to the New York area and four to other Illinois cities ending in Springfield. He retired as a Division Operations Manager May 1, 1990. Roy was a dedicated Boy Scout Volunteer both as a Scout Master in Munster IN, and beginning in 1972, in various capacities for the Abraham Lincoln Council, Boy Scouts of America in Springfield. He served as a District Chairman, Council Commissioner, and Vice President for Properties and three years as Council President. He was a Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the Arrow and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award by the Council in 1983. He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield for many years. He was recognized with the Vocational Service Award in 1988, the Club Service Award in 1994 and the Club Paul Harris Fellow Award in 1986. For many years, first with Marilyn and later with Carol, Roy was an active participant in and strong supporter of Square and Round Dancing in Springfield and across Illinois. He and his partners were active dancers and served tirelessly in many capacities for the promotion and enjoyment of this dancing activity. Roy was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Rev. Julie Wells Blythe officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
