

Lloyd Thomas Mosley, 80, of Springfield died at 9:44 p.m. on August 15, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Mosley was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Creve Coeur, Mo., the son of Isabel and Thomas Mosley. He married Martha "Marty" Slattery on June 16, 1956, in East St. Louis, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Harold and Paul Mosley, and a sister-in-law, Gladys Mosley. He was a graduate of McBride High School, St. Louis University, and received his master's degree from SIU Carbondale. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II on a minesweeper. Lloyd was a speech therapist in the Independence, Mo., East St. Louis, and Cahokia, Ill., public schools. In 1965, he began working for the Division of Services for Crippled Children and retired from there in 1992. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish for more than 40 years. He served as a lector, extraordinary minister, and PSR teacher. He was a member of the Parish Council and trained and scheduled altar servers for many years. He also was active in Blessed Sacrament's parish auction. Lloyd was a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association, past president of the Illinois Speech and Hearing Association, past president of the Cahokia Federation of Teachers, and a member of American Legion Post 32. In 1955 he founded the first YMCA group in Illinois for physically challenged students. From 1955 to 1964, he was also the co-director of Little Giant Camp, SIU's camp for handicapped children. He continued charitable efforts throughout his life, working at St. John's Bread Line and St. Martin de Porre's Food Store. He volunteered for the Caregivers Program, the St. Vincent de Paul organization, and the Legion of Mary. For many years, he coached and judged speech students for the Parochial Speech League and volunteered at charity bingo games at Ursuline Academy and Griffin High School. He was a board member at Lincoln Library from 1992-95 and was a longtime donor to the Central Illinois Blood Bank. Lloyd enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and working in his garden. Most of his leisure time was given to his children, coaching their sports teams and attending their activities. He made great fudge, and barbecued ribs were his specialty. He was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan. His faith and his family were of utmost importance to Lloyd. He loved his children dearly and set a wonderful example for them as a husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Martha "Marty" of Springfield; three sons, Tom (Lisa) of Chatham, Ill., Jim (Judy), of Chesterfield, Mo., and Bob (Kathy) of Springfield; two daughters, Mary Keen (Pat) of Springfield and Jane Mosley (Jeff Reinhardt) of Kansas City, Mo. He had 13 grandchildren: Jennifer, Grace, Hannah, Charlie, Isabel, Maria, Matthew and Anne Mosley, Mackenzie Boltz, Kaitlyn and Megan Keen, and Spencer and Oliver Reinhardt. He also is survived by two sisters Helen (Bob) Glover of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Doris Mosley of Chesterfield, Mo., and two brothers, Richard (Marcia) of Ellisville, Mo., and Jerome (Geraldine) of Overland, Mo., and a sister-in-law Noriko Mosley of St. Louis County, Mo., and many nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2008 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following visitation. A memorial gathering will be held from 10:30 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at Blessed Sacrament Church with a funeral mass at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. David A. Hoefler, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Department of Defense will conduct military honors. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Blessed Sacrament School, 748 W. Laurel, Springfield 62704; or St. John Breadline, 430 N. 5th St., Springfield, IL 62702.
