Margaret was born in Springfield on September 29, 1932, the daughter of Eugene T. and Grace (Westwood) McLaughlin. She graduated from St. Agnes Grade School and Sacred Heart Academy and attended the former Benedictine University (then Springfield Junior College) for a year until marrying her grade school sweetheart, J. Stephen "Steve" Hall, on December 27, 1951, before he shipped off to serve in the Korean War.
With her husband overseas, Margie was a librarian at the West branch of the Lincoln Library. While raising a family of five children, she worked at the former Knit & Rip shop and did accounting for her husband's Standard Oil service station. Most recently, she worked for about 25 years at the counter of Pease's Candy, mostly at Parkway Pointe, until 2014.
Margie was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Parish and lived her entire life in Springfield until moving two years ago for health reasons. She enjoyed reading, knitting, taking motor home trips, gardening, and bowling. Margie grew up as the neighborhood "tomboy," playing baseball with the boys on a brick street not far from Sacred Heart Academy and remembered walking to Maid-Rite for nickel sandwiches.
She is survived by two daughters, Holly (husband, Daniel) Danks of Portland, OR and Christina (husband, Michael) Murrell of Carbondale; two sons, Michael (wife, Joanne) Hall of Tracy, CA and Patrick Hall of Carbondale; six grandchildren, Mitchell, Maggie, Adeline and Hannah Hall, Kathryn Kauffman, and Laura Voegel; and one great-grandson, Anthony Stephen Kauffman.
Her husband Steve died in 2015, and a daughter, Stephanie, and sister, Mary Frances, died in 2018.
A private service will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery at a later date.
The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601; or the Animal Protective League, 1001 Taintor Road, Springfield, IL 62702.
The family is being served by Butler Funeral Home—Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL.
