She was born on January 23, 1946, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Elmer and Bertha Stange.
Marian graduated from McHenry Community High School in 1964 and went on to pursue higher education at Western Illinois University and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Special Education, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to teaching and service. Marian devoted 35 years to Springfield School District 186, where she made a lasting impact on the lives of countless students and families through her dedication, compassion, and unwavering advocacy for children with special needs.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Marian had three sons whom she loved deeply. She spent many years at the soccer fields watching her boys play. Later in life, Marian found some of her greatest joy in time spent with her grandchildren. It was not uncommon to see “Gammy” watching her grandchildren play in their numerous sports, whether it be diving, soccer, ice-skating, volleyball, cheerleading, softball, or basketball. Marian cherished them deeply. She loved to travel and explore new places, but her heart was always drawn to the ocean - where she felt most peaceful and at home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Bertha; brother, Robert Stange; former husband, Michael Kotner; and grandson, Isaac Michael Kotner.
Marian is survived by her sons, Marcus (Jeannie) and David Kotner, both of Springfield, and Jeremy (Holly) Kotner of New Berlin; and nine grandchildren, Lexi, Kody, Mia, Andrew, Amelia, Harper, Gavin, Grace, and Gabe.
