He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, December 29, 1941 the son of Marshall H. and Sarah Jane (Flenniken) Austin Sr. His parents and a sister, Susan Claassen preceded him in death.
Known as Marty by his friends and family, he attended the United States Naval Academy earning a bachelor of science in engineering and later a master’s degree from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey CA. His service in the United States Navy spanned over 20 years. He earned the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V”, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea) He retired June 30, 1984 as Lieutenant Commander.
After his retirement, he received his master’s degree in MIS from American University and worked as a consultant in Computer Security for 15 years.
He was a faithful and devoted member of Salem Lutheran Church, Jacksonville, IL. He loved to sail and found great joy sailing his 26’ single hull boat. He loved his family, encouraging them in all their endeavors and proud of their accomplishments. He loved his canine companions as well.
Marty married the love of his life, Vickie Torbeck Terio in Arlington, VA, May 4, 1979 and she survives. Also surviving are his three sons; Christopher (Julie) Austin of Sherwood, OR, Alan (Jackie) Austin of Eugene, OR, and Christopher (Anne) Terio of Alexandria, VA. He is the proud granddad of Andrew Austin, A.J. Terio, Paige Austin, Emma Austin, and Hannah Austin. Also surviving are his brother, Robert (Cindy) Austin of Carmichael, CA and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will host a visitation at Concordia Village Chapel 4101 W. Iles Springfield, IL 62711 from 9:00 am Friday, Nov. 8, 2024 until the time of a funeral service there at 10:00 am Friday in the Chapel with Chaplain Jeff Harter and Pastor Jonah Schultz officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield where full military honors will be accorded by the U. S. Navy.
