Mary Janette Holmes

Mary Janette Holmes, 75, of Springfield, died at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2005 at St. John’s Hospice. Mary was born on January 5, 1930 in Springfield, the daughter of Carl and Geraldine McGillick Kraus. She married Charles R. Gillespie and he preceded her in death in 1958;she married Albert J. Holmes in September 1961 in Petersburg. Mary attended Sacred Heart Grade School and was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy. She retired in 1990 from the State of Illinois State House of Representatives where she was employed since 1970 as Chief Journal Clerk. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church where she volunteered in many areas throughout her life. She was a member of St. Joseph Home Coterie (Gene Kraus Circle), St. Louise de Marillac, St. Aloysius Catholic Women, St. Aloysius Altar and Rosary Society and Sacred Heart Academy Alumni. She was preceded in death by her first husband; parents and one brother: Carl Kraus. She is survived by her husband; Albert J. Holmes of Springfield; four sons: Rick Gillespie of Crystal Lake, Gary (wife, Jane) Gillespie of Quincy, Tom Gillespie of Boynton Beach, FL, Michael (wife, Ann) Holmes of Springfield; two daughters: Janette (husband, Gene) Drendel and Lynn (husband, David) Chapman both of Springfield; eleven grandchildren; two sisters: Freda Burg of Springfield, Kathy (husband, Steve) Williams of Hot Springs, AR and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Concelebrated Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2119 N. 20th St. Springfield with Rev. Donald Meehling, Principal Celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Aloysius Catholic School, 2125 N. 21st. St., Springfield, IL 62704 or St. John’s Hospice Program, 800 E. Carpenter, Springfield, IL 62702.
