

Mary Mildred Lakin, 92, of Springfield, died at 12:40 p.m. on Monday, December 26, 2005 at Oak Terrace Healthcare Center. Mary was born on November 1, 1913 in Nokomis, the daughter of Joseph and Rosemary Novascone Jachino. She married Herbert Lakin on June 17, 1931 at the United Methodist Church in Nokomis; he preceded her in death on May 15, 1992. Mary was a member of Laurel United Methodist Church. She retired from the State of Illinois Secretary of State’s Office where she had been employed for sixteen years. She also had been employed by The Vogue. She and her husband were also owners of Dairy Queen in Nokomis for many years. She volunteered for many years at St. John’s Hospital in the office and was a member of the Ladies Elk’s Lodge 158, Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles, Louise Campbell Circle and AFSME Union. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. She is survived by one daughter: Shirley (husband, Ronald) DeLong of Springfield; one son: Herbert (wife, Marjorie) Lakin of Huntington Beach, CA; two granddaughters: Julie (husband, Arthur) Hermes of New Berlin and Melissa Lakin of Huntington Beach, CA; one great grandson: Alexander Hermes and one step great granddaughter: Rachel Hermes; one brother: Victor (wife, Winnie) Jachino of Lombard, IL and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home with Dr. John P. Hamilton, officiating. Entombment will follow in Oak Ridge Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to Laurel United Methodist Church, 631 W. South Grand Ave, Springfield, IL 62704.
